At my first Suzuki teacher training institute Michiko Yurko, the instructor, said “Don’t criticize your students.” This was the beginning for me of a long career of teaching with the positive approach. The Suzuki Method is a structured learning progression geared to children, based on love and mutual respect. Students learn to play by ear at first, and the parents are involved in the home practice. All children have the potential to develop talent in the right environment.

With young beginners, the Suzuki Method affords immediate rewards for the children’s efforts. We get the hands moving and the ear focusing on the tone, right from the start. When it ‘takes”, that is, when the student is curious and engaged, miracles can happen.
